Abstract

This article evaluates, in the Brazilian socio-cultural context, indicators and factors associated with child neglect based on the theoretical model of Lacharité, Éthier and Nolin (2006), which proposes that neglect stems from difficulties in the bond between family members and between the family and its community environment, based on qualitative research focusing on 14 families notified and monitored by the Child Protection Agency. The results based on the evaluation of the indicators and factors allowed us to identify two different groups of families, despite the socio-economic equivalence between them: one characterized by the presence of consistent indicators of neglect and lower levels of family bonding and social support; one characterized by the absence of consistent indicators of neglect and higher levels of family bonding and social support. The results are discussed in order to encourage reflection on contextualized criteria for identifying and monitoring ‘cases’ of neglect, with a view to differentiating them appropriately from situations of poverty/socioeconomic vulnerability.
