Interprofessional Education, Its Fundamentals, Impacts And Role In The Context Of Paradigmatic Changes: a narrative literature review

Abstract

In the contemporary context, advances towards a change in the model of patient care, as well as discussions about the need to change the education model to train new professionals capable of working as a team, are essential and emerging. there is such a need that this educational model has been developed under the name of Interprofessional Education (IPE). In order to discuss the social impacts produced by IPE in the area of ​​health, this narrative review had a standardized search method to identify its effects on health education and has a critical-reflective character on the topic. The study made it possible to identify that the IPE impacts the current educational model, such as: (1) an increase in user safety when using the health system; (2) greater accountability of educational institutions for professional training; (3) education oriented towards horizontal teaching, collaboration between all participants in the hierarchies of knowledge (teachers, students, tutors and so on) and application of knowledge in a practical context; (4) varied possibility of applying the IPE structure; (5) better development of professional skills that relate to the interaction processes in the workplace. The study concludes that this teaching model makes it possible to think about education in an innovative way, capable of promoting the improvement of quality in health care, promoting the overcoming of traditional fragmented and disciplinary models towards a complex and integrating understanding between professionals and knowledge.
